Another morning prayer of Baillie's to begin a new week: “O GOD, ever blessed, you have given me the night for rest and the day for work and service. Grant that the refreshment from last night’s sleep may now be used for your greater glory in the life of the day ahead. Do not let it produce laziness in me, but instead let it encourage more diligent action and willing obedience.

Another evening prayer of John Baillie’s to finish the week: “O EVERLASTING God, let the light of your eternity fall now upon my passing days. O holy God, let the light of your perfect righteousness fall upon my sinful ways. O most compassionate God, let the light of your love pierce to the most secret corners of my heart and overcome the darkness of sin within me.

And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, and the people of Israel said to them, “Would that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.” (Ex. 16:2-3)

And the people grumbled against Moses, saying, "What shall we drink?" (Ex. 15:24) After they departed from the Red Sea, the people of Israel spent three days in the wilderness but could not find water. Since Moses was God’s spokesperson, they often addressed God through Moses, whom they could readily approach.

“Now, O Lord, when the day’s work is done, I turn once more to you. All comes from you, all lives in you, all ends in you. In the morning I set out with your blessing, all day you have upheld me by your grace, and now I pray that you will grant me rest and peace. I cast all my cares upon you and leave to you the outcome of all my work. I pray that you will prosper all that has been done today in accordance with your will, and forgive all that has been done wrong. What good I have done today, graciously accept and use; and if I have done any harm, annul and overrule it by your almighty power.

“Pharaoh's chariots and his host he cast into the sea, and his chosen officers were sunk in the Red Sea. The floods covered them; they went down into the depths like a stone. Your right hand, O LORD, glorious in power, your right hand, O LORD, shatters the enemy....” (Ex. 15:4-6)

Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the LORD, saying, “I will sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea. The LORD is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise him, my father's God, and I will exalt him. The LORD is a man of war; the LORD is his name....” (Ex. 15:1-3)
